CSAB-JPIA Prepares Future Augustinian CPAs for a Changing Accounting Profession

The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants of Colegio San Agustin–Bacolod brought classroom learning closer to professional practice through the BSA Program and Accounting Standard Update held on October 12 at the Audio Visual Room.

Bringing together Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) and Accounting Information System (BSAIS) students, the event explored the academic expectations, evolving accounting standards, and legal responsibilities that shape the accountancy profession.

The sessions provided students with essential insights into their chosen field. Ms. Airyn S. Apale, CPA, MBA, discussed the Accountancy program, its academic requirements, and the upcoming changes to the Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination (CPALE) to take effect in October 2029. Meanwhile, Mr. Jason B. Cercado, CPA, MBA, CMA, discussed the Philippine Accountancy Act of 2004, highlighting the professional standards, ethical principles, and responsibilities that govern Filipino accountants.

Adding a valuable global perspective, Mr. Saizen Trocio, CPA, a proud alumnus of CSAB’s Accountancy Program now based in Dubai, UAE, shared insights on IFRS 18 (Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements). His discussion connected classroom learning with accounting practices in the professional world, demonstrating the relevance of international standards in promoting transparent and consistent financial reporting. His professional journey also served as an inspiring example of the opportunities available to Augustinian accountants in the global workplace.

Beyond technical knowledge, the activity underscored a fundamental truth: accountancy is not simply about mastering figures — it is about earning trust, exercising sound judgment, and upholding integrity. As accounting standards evolve and professional expectations grow, aspiring Augustinian CPAs must cultivate not only technical competence but also ethical discipline and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Through initiatives like this, JPIA-CSAB and the College of Accountancy, Business Education, and Computer Studies (CABECS) continue to strengthen students’ preparation for the demands of the profession, nurturing future Augustinian accountants and business leaders who are competent, accountable, and ready to make a meaningful difference locally and globally.

The event was graced by the presence of Rev. Fr. Manuel M. Vergara, OSA, Dean of CABECS, and Dr. Randdie P. Cuelo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, whose participation underscored the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and professional formation.

Viva, San Agustin!
