The 2024 Student Research Conference

Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod’s Research and Planning Office (RPO) successfully hosted an event that united the institution’s brilliant minds and passionate hearts across various research disciplines. The momentous Student Research Conference took place on June 3, 2024, at the Audio-Visual Room and its vicinity, anchored on this year’s theme: “Interdisciplinary Frontiers: Bridging Humanity, Technology, and Health for a Sustainable Future.” Dynamic participants from the College of Accountancy, Business Education, and Computer Studies (CABECS), the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE), the College of Engineering (COE), the College of Health and Allied Professions (CHAP), and the Basic Education Department – Senior High School (BED-SHS) attended the conference. Proud representatives from each department competed in Oral and Poster Presentations within the categories of Health and Medicine, Engineering and ICT, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

In the Oral Presentation Contest for the Engineering and ICT category, first place was awarded to the study “ECNET: An Emergency Communications Network using Lora Technologies,” presented by Mr. Norbert Francis C. Baylon from the BED-SHS. Second place was secured by Ms. Kate Therese P. Nobleza, also from the BED-SHS, for her study “ButterSwipe: A Wireless Pointer Mobile Application.” Third place went to Ms. Bea Benitez from the CABECS for her study “Coin-Operated Printing Kiosk with Queuing System.”

Furthermore, the cream of the crops from the Humanities and Social Sciences category for the Oral Presentation were all from the CASE. First place was awarded to Ms. Melchie Mediadero for her study, “Diamonds in the Rough: Translating Haritu Oral Story of Babaylanes-Bukignon Cultural Community into English.” Second place went to Ms. Glory Feye D. Galve for her study, “Gaslighting, Emotional Intelligence, and Happiness of Non-Teaching Personnel of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod.” Third place was clinched by Mr. Dane Kyle Peruelo for his study, “The Effects of Game-Based Learning on the Numeracy and Problem-Solving Skills, and Mathematics Attitude of Grade 7 Students.”

In the Health & Medicine category for the Oral Presentation, first place was awarded to Ms. Pearl Jean Ramos for her study, “Formulation of Guava (Psidium guajava) Leaf Ethanolic Extract as Topical Antibacterial Hydrogel-Based Membrane.” Second place went to Ms. Eunice Fernandez for her study, “Anti-Urolithiatic, Antibacterial, and Antioxidant Properties of Katmon (Dillenia philippinensis) Leaf Ethanolic Extract.” Third place was awarded to Ms. Esther Grace A. Villagomez for her study, “Incidence of Colistin-Resistant Coliforms from Poultry Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Certain Poultry Farms in Sagay City.”

In the Poster Presentation Contest for the Engineering and ICT category, first place was awarded to Ms. Rixienne Jan Dingcong from the COE for her study, “Production of Alternative Briquettes from Spent Mushroom Substrate and the Effect of Binder Concentration on its Combustion Characteristics.” Second place went to Mr. Petronio R. Gaudite IV from the BED-SHS for his study, “Filipino Sign Language (FSL) Translator: Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) Employed FSL Recognition.” Third place was awarded to Ms. Gueneviere C. Arellano, also from the BED-SHS, for her study, “VocaBee: A Vocabulary Acquisition Gaming Application for Students.”

In the Humanities and Social Sciences category of the Oral Presentation contest, first place was awarded to Mr. Seg Benedict Yana from the CASE, for his study, “A Promise Fulfilled: The Lived Experiences of Festival Choreographers in Negros Occidental.” Second place went to Ms. Ma. Theresa M. Divinagracia, also from the CASE, for her study, “Positive Childhood Experiences: Emotional Intelligence and Resilience among Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod CASE Students.” Third place was awarded to Mr. Keith Acerada from the BED-SHS, for his study, “The Impact of Mobile Application Budgeting Tool on Financial Literacy, Saving Behavior, and Self-Control of Students: An Experimental Study.”

In the Health & Medicine category of the poster presentation, first place was awarded to Ms. Kimberly Tortogo for her study, “Assessing Pharmacists’ Readiness on the Implementation of Telepharmacy in Bacolod City.” Second place went to Ms. Natasha Kate B. Jandumon for her study, “Efficiency of Selected Antiseptic Agents as Alternatives for Brush-Based Surgical Hand Scrubbing among 3rd Year Nursing Students of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod in Reducing Skin Pathogens.” Third place was awarded to Mr. Isidro Maguad for his study, “Tibig (Ficus nota) Leaf Ethanolic Extracts Exhibit Antihypertensive, Anti-inflammatory, and Antioxidative Properties Using In-vitro Methods.”

Ultimately, Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA, the School President, emphasized the significance of research, stating, “One of the important aspects of research is that it leads to the creation or enhancement of our knowledge.” Indeed, research opportunities are the cornerstone of academic, professional, and personal growth, especially for the budding and curious minds of young Augustinians.
